Ads?

Postby Taylor » Thu Jul 19, 2012 7:14 pm

I've been getting some complaints about the slowness of the game. Right now it's hosted on a shared server, which is really inexpensive, but means that there are other sites stored on the same computer and they all share memory and processing speed, so things can really slow down if people are accessing those sites, even if they're not accessing PBN.
The hosting company I use has some pretty cheap plans for dedicated hosting solutions. They offer a trial of the program, which I'll be checking out sometime in the next week to see how the game performs on there (I'd be surprised if it's anything less than "substantially better").
Worst comes to worst, at the lowest level plan, I'd be able to pay for it out of my own pocket, though I'd prefer not to. I'm considering another income source for the game though, namely ads.

The ads I'm thinking of using are from a site called Project Wonderful. It's a pretty cool system for both advertisers and pages that host ads, I've used it to advertise PBN before (and leftover money I'd get from the ads would be able to get put back into ads for PBN on other sites very easily). It's mostly used by webcomics, online games and people doing creative stuff. PW checks each page when they sign up to advertise to make sure it's not some scam or virus site, so you don't have to worry about what you might click on (though of course there's no requirement to click anything if none of it interests you).
No popups, no flash, no sketchy stuff like that, I'll probably set it to not allow animated ads either. There's a lot of control of what gets displayed on my end, so if something offensive gets put up I can block that advertiser.

What's the feeling? Are ads an OK trade-off for a faster server, or are you against them no matter what?

(Also, please note, this is not a request for more donations. PBN is and always will be a free game, and I don't want people to feel obligated to give me money if they don't want to or can't afford it. The game is not in any risk of going away due to lack of funds, this is just looking at expanding things for the future.)

I think the problem with SSW's ads was the fact that there were some porno ads that showed up.

Bosses don't, if the boobies are on your computer at work!
(Though I'm not really sure bosses would be pleased to see Werehippies on your computer at work either)

The boobies were advertising Ashley Madison, which is a site for people to have affairs on, so I can see why people didn't like them.

Project Wonderful is usually pretty good about keeping their ads appropriate to the page they are on. SSW had a lot of sex in the game so i can see why adulterous boobies could be considered appropriate.
